Overview

The Assistant Vice President oversees certain aspects of payroll administration and, under the general direction and framework of overall goals and objectives, is responsible for the leadership, supervision, accuracy, and completeness of all accounting functions within the department. This role ensures accuracy in general ledger management, investment portfolio oversight, and financial statement preparation while optimizing operational efficiency. Additionally, the Assistant Vice President collaborates with the Vice President of Accounting to support the organization's financial strategy and long-term goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the accounting associates through effective communication, delegation, coaching, performance reviews, and professional development planning. Partner with Human Resources to recruit, interview, hire, and onboard accounting associates. Oversight with monitoring operating budgets, and proactively addressing and communicating any variances/issues.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage all accounting functions which may include, but not be limited to, Accounts Payable, Financial Analysis, General Ledger, Certificate Investments, etc.  Oversight of monthly preparation of financial statements and maintaining of general ledger reconciliation framework.
  • Ensure all accounting practices comply with federal, state, and local financial regulations specific to credit unions. Accurately and promptly file the NCUA 5300 call report, share insurance reports, and payroll taxes. Apply comprehensive GAAP knowledge.
  • Interpret financial data, identify trends, and make informed decisions using strong analytical skills. Resolve accounting issues or related problems through proactive communication. Leverage experience with interpreting complex financial data and financial analysis to provide insights.
  • Monitor the financial statements and budget for variances.  Ensure that all associates complete these functions and that there is appropriate backup. Ensure daily balance share analysis and daily cash position analysis are in balance.
  • Assist in project management, implementation of new programs/strategies, assist the Vice President of Accounting and Chief Financial Officer in overall objectives and goals of the department and credit union.
  • Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial information. Oversee accounting functions to ensure effective job coverage and proactively resolve accounting issues. Maintain a detail-oriented and organized approach.
  • Coordinate along with Vice President of Accounting the annual budget by establishing guidelines for budgeting, establishing deadlines and partnering with the Senior Leadership Team to create an operational budget for each area of the credit union.
  • Prepare and/or oversee the production of various quarterly and annual reports (i.e. unclaimed property report, ad hoc reports and studies, etc.)  and assist in preparations and responses to questions tied to the annual audit and exam to support the efficient operations of the credit union.
  • Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications to business processes and operating procedures for stronger internal controls, and improved efficiency and accuracy; prepares various reports on operations and activities.
  • Utilize modern accounting software and financial technology, including Corelation, Jack Henry ProfitStar tool, BlackLine GL matching, and other general accounting systems, to improve financial processes and reporting accuracy.
  • Use information from a financial software system; develops and maintains various accounting worksheets and schedules using spreadsheet programs; reconciles accounting and financial data utilized and duplicated in different but interfaced software systems.
  • Keep up to date on accounting, budgeting, investing, and other department activities that may impact business processes and suggests improvements as needed; Perform periodic audits and reconciliations to ensure that activities are accurate and is compliant with established policies and procedures.
  • Plan and evaluate associate performance; establish performance standards; and personnel development targets; monitors performance and provides coaching for performance improvement and ongoing development; ensures credit union’s Business Continuity Program and procedures are written, tested, and current.
  • Perform other related work as required, ensuring accountability and alignment with organizational objectives; Oversight of vital record logs in compliance with appropriate regulation; provide updates to Vice President of Accounting and Chief Financial Officer.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent required, Master’s degree in accounting or related degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Excellent communication, time management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Strong knowledge of fundamental financial accounting principles, concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Strong experience using accounting software and data analytics.
  • Advance MS Excel understanding and data retrieval applications.
